How do you help human resource managers develop that marketing strategy ?
By understanding where veterans are. They're within every community. How to attract them. A lot of what we hear is that veterans are not familiar with where the jobs are and there is that stigma sometimes that maybe they need to transition into a public safety roles and in reality they can do so many different jobs because they do possess the skills and talents.
Are vets the answer to that job skills gap that we hear so much about in America ?
We think so and we have so many wonderful and successful stories that have been shared through all of our chapters, we just heard yesterday from one of our chapters where they hired 5 individuals for critical positions and some of them in management and leadership.

It's time for the employers to take the active role, we need to be the ones to understand how they talk, how they write their resumes, it's our role to dig deep to make sure that they can uh, find suitable positions within our organizations.

After 20 years as an Army officer, followed by a career as an account director at an advertising firm, Andrew Morton is now the Director of Social Engagement at SHRM, the Society for Human Resource Management. In this role he's responsible for all social media activities and communications. Andrew joins us now here in Boston. Andrew welcome to Hiring America.
What was the transition like for you as an Army officer into the field of advertising?
Well, you know, I'd worked with an advertising agency as a part of a military internship and I understood some of the concepts with regard to how to market and digital media. The challenge I think wasn't the capabilities challenge, it was a cultural challenge. And being able to transition from what I call the shallow end of the pool in the military to the deep end of the pool in the private sector, was one that I wanted but it, it was a challenge, none the less.

I think one of the most important skills to have whether it's acquired or whether it's nurtured or whether you're born with it, is empathy. And empathy is achieved through understanding. And when you go to different places in the world. Shopkeepers in Iraq, people that I met in Bosnia, Egypt and Macedonia, farmers, people who gave me everything that they had and welcomed me into their home, those types of experiences you, you can't purchase those. You can't get those in a classroom.
Dr. Shirley Davis is affectionately known as the success doctor. She's an accomplished corporate executive, global workforce and talent management expert and international speaker and an executive coach. She is president of SDS Global Enterprises, a global talent management solutions firm.
As the success doctor, what's your advice for job seekers ?
Reinventing yourself, and that's exactly what they're having to do, as they come back from tours of duty, is reintegrate or reinvent themselves in a way that makes them attractive to the work place.So, the first one is all about having a vision. Understanding what your gifts, your strengths, your talents are. What kind of work do you want to do that is going to really drive your passion and your purpose. The second V is visibility. You've got to get out there and you gotta make connections, you've got to meet people, you've got to tell them who you are, what you do, and why should they care. The third V is that you've got to be vocal, so when you get a seat at that table, you get your foot in the door in the organization, you've got to be able to speak up and tell people, what it is, the work that you're doing, the results that you're getting, and again, what are some of the other things that you can do and want to do with those skills.
